Variety honoring Chris Rock in Palm Springs

Chris Rock has been added to the list of men receiving awards during a Variety ceremony that’s part of the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

Rock, who most recently appeared in the film, “Top Five,” will receive the Creative Impact in Comedy Award, according to a Variety news release.

Already announced for the ceremony are actor Steve Carell, who will receive the Creative Impact in Acting Award, and director Rob Marshall, who will receive the Creative Impact in Directing Award.

In “Top Five,” Rock plays a former comedian who is interviewed by a newspaper reporter about his movie career and recovery as an alcoholic.

The National Board of Review presented Rock with its Spotlight Award for writing, directing and starring in the film. It also was recognized by the Broadcast Film Critics Association with a nomination for best comedy, best actor in a comedy and best actress in a comedy, according to Variety.

“Chris Rock has just taken his career and art to a new level with ‘Top Five,'” Variety Vice President and Executive Editor Steve Gaydos said in a statement. “Straight from its first festival screening, which resulted in a massive bidding war and created anticipation for Rock’s legions of fans, ‘Top Five’ established the comic as one of America’s most provocative and dynamic filmmakers.”

The Variety brunch, which will take place at the Parker Palm Springs, usually happens the morning after the Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala. It’s by invitation only and is attended by film industry people, gala attendees and local celebrities.
