6 Unforgettable Moments From the Palm Springs Film Festival You Won’t See on TV
Ask any Hollywood reporter, and they’ll tell you: the Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala is one of the most entertaining nights of award season. Why? The ceremony isn’t broadcast, which means that stars really let loose, have fun, and don’t have to deal with any pesky time limitations when it comes to their acceptance speeches. This year was no different, as Matt Damon, Johnny Depp, Cate Blanchett, and a host of other major names took the stage. Read on for some of the most memorable, hilarious, and heartfelt moments from a star-studded night you’ll never see on TV.
Kate Winslet presented her Steve Jobs costar Michael Fassbender with the international star award and had a great time giving him a hard time over his nerves about playing the Apple founder. She said, on his first day, “I remember, we sort of had a hug, and he held on to me just a little longer than was normal.”
But Michael wasn’t about to let Kate have the last word. When he took the stage, he addressed her comment: “I did hold on to you a little longer than I should,” he said. “I soiled my pants, I think.”
The cast of The Big Short snagged the ensemble performance award, but one star of the film was notably missing: Ryan Gosling. Steve Carell did not miss a beat in acknowledging the absentee actor. “Ryan Gosling is not here tonight,” he said, “and I think as an ensemble, we can all agree — we hate Ryan Gosling.”
Johnny took home the Desert Palm achievement award for playing gangster Whitey Bulger in Black Mass. After warning the crowd — “I hope you guys are planted in your seats, because I’m going to take, like, 35 minutes” — he made sure not to leave the stage without informing us that his statuette “has a buttocks.” Thanks, Johnny.
The Martian star Matt Damon was honored with the prestigious chairman’s award, which just so happened to be granted to his good friend Ben Affleck a while back. “Ben won this award a few years ago and insisted everyone call him ‘The Chairman,’ so I’m going to follow suit,” he said. “Ben’s gonna refer to me as ‘The Chairman’ for at least a week.”
